The physical spaces within OpenSimulator are setup as regions on a simulator, it builds the lowest physical instance attached to a grid.
Simulators can contain one or multiple regions of different sizes and even owned by different people.
Comparatively they are similar to their structure like virtual machines on a larger server or individual applications on a computer.
Without them, with exception of standalones, grids would be entirely empty and not usable.
